THE OBSTACLE – 2001 - Oil on Linen – 190 x 160 cm
Private Collection New Zealand
Offering no solutions this is an analogy for those seemingly insurmountable obstacles that visit individuals, communities and mankind. The observer on the right longs for the faint light through the gap while the one on the left ponders the impossibility of it all. The rest get on with the job no matter how impossible it is and these represent the 80% or so producers in any society. In Niue, some viewers quipped that it was an accurate depiction of the state of that country and although I never thought about it in those terms, subconsciously there may be something in it.
