In this painting there is a very rare reference to the Niuean culture in that I have juxtaposed the symbol of Christianity, the cross formed by the girl, with the rainbow, the visual manifestation of the primary Niuean god Tangaloa. The chasm-like nature of the cliffs provide something of a dichotomy in that the subtle anthropomorphic forms within the opposing cliff faces seem to be arguing, an analogy which speaks of the dilemma with reconciling the old with the new, not only in Niue but in the global sense.
