AND WHILE THE SEA EVAPORATES – 1994 – Oil on Board – 150 x 120 cm
Corporate Collection, New Zealand
This painting is one of a handful of commissions that I have done and perhaps the only that I have had to work to a brief, which is normally impossible. The corporation that ordered the work, had in its group among other things, a company that made the great New Zealand red band gumboot and a large sea salt evaporation plant. It was my task to employ elements of these industries and others into a painting and so the gumboots were placed on a few models after which the figures were transported to the tidal flats of the salt work’s evaporation ponds (perhaps more reminiscent of the Kaipara tidal flats) to await the new tide for reasons unknown.
